The Oregon Trail movie musical in development, and it could be R-rated

Believe it or not, the original Oregon Trail launched all the way back in 1971. Ever since that release, the game/franchise has endured, with legions of gamers playing various iterations across the decades. As a matter of fact, it seems like Switch owners will soon be able to get in on the fun, but that certainly won’t be the first time Nintendo fans have had a crack at the legendary adventure.

Besides the rumored Switch release, what else can Oregon Trail fans look forward to in the near future? The directing duo of Josh Gordon and Will Speck, who just tackled Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, revealed that a movie musical adaptation of the classic educational game is in the works.

According to the duo, the adaptation will take a dark comedy approach, as they believe there’s a healthy dose of darkly comedic moments in Oregon Trail. As for the film also being a musical, Gordon and Speck had so much fun with the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile musical that they were eager to dive back into the genre.

As for actual progress on the film, the duo has said they do indeed have the rights to an Oregon Trail film, but they haven’t landed a studio partner yet. The team wanted a chance to sit down and do some writing to flesh out the idea first, and then they’ll shop it to various film studios. That may largely depend on the movie’s rating, with Gordon and Speck figuring out whether they want to go the PG-13 or R-rated route.
