Square Enix’s Project Athia Will Be a PS5 Console Exclusive for at Least 2 Years

If you don’t have a PlayStation 5 yet, well, you’re not alone and you’re only missing out on so much. Demon’s Souls remake aside, there aren’t any major exclusives you’re locked out of playing just yet, but we already have eyes on some upcoming PS5-exclusives and PS5/PC titles. Many of them are quite far off, but Sony did just clear up some details on a few.

In a highlight trailer on “new and upcoming games” for the PS5, Sony unveils new exclusivity details on Square Enix’s Project Athia as well as a few other titles. The mysterious Athia—a new IP being worked on by Luminous Productions—has the most intriguing deal with Sony of the bunch. Listed as “in development for PS5,” there’s no indication it’ll make its debut next year, but whenever Project Athia does launch, it’ll be exclusive to the PS5 and PC for “at least 24 months after release date.”

That’s a big stretch of time for an exclusivity deal these days. Consider that Death Stranding, a game Sony itself published on PS4 last year, was then published by 505 Games on PC this past summer. While the public knows very little about this open-world adventure, it seems Sony’s enough of a believer in Luminous to lock Athia down for a longer-than-usual period.

The new trailer also confirms a more predictable arrangement for two titles from Bethesda Softworks: Arkane’s Deathloop and Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo. Both of those games, previously known to be timed Sony console exclusives, are aiming for 2021 launches (Deathloop now has a May release date). They’ll both be available only on PS5 and PC until at least a year after launch, at which point we could see them come to Xbox—which would certainly make sense considering Microsoft’s deal to purchase Bethesda.

Other upcoming PS5 games appear to be holding steady on let’s-call-them-“soon-ish” launch plans. Insomniac’s new Ratchet & Clank title, Rift Apart, is targeting a console “launch window” release for PS5 and is listed here as a 2021 title. The ray-traced wonders of Gran Turismo 7 also get the “coming 2021” label.

Both of those, at least, are PS5-only titles. Hopefully there’ll be a break in the console shortages between now and when the first of these games launch next year. Really though, lord help us if it’s still hard to track down a PS5 by the time Athia sheds its working title and we find out what the heck it actually is.
