The Ronin is the undisputed master of deadly swordplay in Rogue Legacy 2. Requiring a castle level of 48 and a heaping handful of gold to unlock, the Ronin is anything but a starter class. But the investment required to unlock and master them is well worth it. The Ronin’s powerful swings and space-rending talent make this class an incredibly weapon-wielding force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, this prodigious talent with the blade comes at a cost. The Ronin is tied for the second lowest starting health is all of Rogue Legacy 2, with the Astromancer being their low-vitality companion. With the Astromancer, this stat disparity is somewhat expected. They are an extremely powerful mage after all, low starting health pretty much comes with the territory. But the Ronin has to get up closer – though thankfully not too close, thanks to the absurd length of its sword swings – in order to be truly effective. As such, the Ronin occupies a similar space to the Assassin, dealing out huge damage and falling back when the time is right, as opposed to tankier swordsmen like the knight. We’ll help you master the Ronin’s particular playstyle with our Rogue Legacy 2 class guide, and soon you’ll be happily cutting your way through even the trickiest biomes.
In Rogue Legacy 2, the Ronin wield the Katana as its weapon. As opposed to other bladed melee weapons like the Knight’s Great Sword and the Duellist’s Saber, the Katana has a very long reach. This enables the Ronin to safely poke at targets from a decent distance, without having to worry about closing the gap completely and risking damage.
Keeping a small amount of distance from your enemies is further encouraged by the Katana’s unique skill crit property. The Crit does not rely on timing like the Ranger in order to skill crit. Instead, this property is based on positioning. Only hits with the blade’s edge will skill crit, meaning that if you are allowing yourself to constantly be very to close your enemies, you are playing the Ronin sub-optimally. Thankfully, this positioning is fairly easy to pull off, and makes up for the fact that dash attacks are not possible with the Katana.
The Katana’s incredible reach also allows for more roundabout methods of dealing damage. It is often possible to swing at a wall and have the blade pass through and connect with an enemy on the other side. This allows you to stay safe and wipe out their health bar, while – depending on the type of enemy – their attacks bounce harmlessly off the other side of the wall.
The Ronin’s talent in Rogue Legacy 2 is Immortal Kotetsu, a powerful and damaging teleportation skill. Immortal Kotetsu can either be launched immediately with the press of a button, or held in order to aim more precisely. When released, the Ronin will vanish and slash forward in a line, appearing at the other side of the line after a moment. They are invulnerable during the move, allowing it to serve as a great way to get out of danger, as well as a damaging technique.
Immortal Kotetsu thankfully does not require a number of successful hits on enemies in order to recharge, as the Katana takes a while between each swing. Instead, the talent recharges after a flat 5 seconds, allowing it to be used frequently. And if you time Immortal Kotetsu right, you can be using it even more often, as the cooldown fully resets whenever an enemy is killed using the technique!
The Ronin’s class passive in Rogue Legacy 2 is known as Lone Traveller. This passive ability grants the Ronin an incredible 20% buff to their strength. It is this ability that allows the Ronin to deal such incredible damage, and also what prevents it from being a true glass cannon class. The increase in strength means that certain lifesteal talismans and properties will also greatly increase in potency. So, while the Ronin may not last long if they take too many hits, with the right build they are able to quickly regain the health that they do lose. With this added longevity and absurd damage potential, the Ronin becomes a truly fearsome class.
