Oppo lands in Brazil – to set up local manufacturing

In a surprising twist, Oppo is taking a flight to Brazil. One of the main Chinese smartphone makers is heading to the South-American country. More than just a smartphone maker, Oppo is also a leader in terms of technology and innovation. Now, it’ll try its luck in the Brazilian market. Can it succeed?

Brazil is not an easy market for smartphone makers. After all, there are high import rates. Also, the country’s duties are high. However, Oppo will try its luck selling the Oppo Reno 7. It’s not the latest, but apparently, it’s a “safe bet”.

Oppo is establishing a partnership with some local stores to sell smartphones. The company’s official debut will start next Monday, September 26th. The company plans to study the market in the upcoming months. It’ll follow the performance and see if the demand grows. If the attempt turns into a successful shot, then, Oppo has ambitious plans – it will establish local manufacturing.

For the first months, Oppo will import its devices and sell them through local retailers. However, it admits the possibility of local manufacturing. The company’s Brazilian President Jim Zhang left the following statement:

“We understand that import duties, local taxes, and other costs are high. For that reason, we plan, someday, to begin local manufacturing. However, for now, we need to understand the country’s market. Only after that, we can begin this operation”.

Brazil is Oppo’s next country in Latin America

Oppo has been trying its luck in LATAM for three years. Now, the Brazillian consumer will be the company’s next target. A few years ago, it would be a much more difficult market. However, Brazilian customers are finally getting familiar with Chinese phones. For instance, Xiaomi is a popular name in Brazil. It also sells its phones through partner stores, and so far, has no plans for local manufacturing. The big challenge is to compete with giants such as Samsung and Motorola. These brands have a long tradition in Brazil and well-established local manufacturing.

Oppo certainly has the expertise to conquer the market. After all, the brand is 5th in the world’s ranking. According to IDC, the company sold almost 24,7 million smartphones during Q2 2022. Let’s see if Brazil will bring positive numbers to the Chinese brand. Worth noting that the brand wants to offer up to five years of warranty. That is something that others brands aren’t offering.

Oppo Reno 7 specifications

To recall, the Oppo Reno 7 is a premium mid-range phone. It flaunts a 6.43-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel also has an in-display fingerprint and Full HD+ resolution. It packs Dimensity 900 SoC and a 64 MP camera with OIS. The device draws its powers from a 4,500 mAh battery with 65 W fast charging.

In Europe, Oppo already has the Oppo Reno 8 series available. However, there is no forecast for this lineup or other products such as the Oppo Watch, to reach Brazil.
