Nvidia has introduced a lot of changes from the RTX 30 series cards to the RTX 4000 series. The 3090 Ti is built on the Ampere architecture, while the RTX 4080 is built on the Ada Lovelace architecture, which uses 4nm technology.
The Ampere architecture belongs to the second generation of the RTX, while the Lovelace architecture is the third generation of the RTX. Every CUDA, tensor, and ray tracing core of Ada Lovelace’s architecture is more potent than that of the Ampere architecture.
The actual comparison of the RTX 4080 and the RTX 3090 Ti cannot be determined until we thoroughly test the upcoming 40 series cards. But, based on the architecture, it is expected that the graphical architecture of the 4080 graphics card will offer a significant leap in performance as compared to the RTX 3090 Ti.

According to the research, the RTX 4080 12GB will present a performance quite close to the RTX 3090ti even though the 3090 Ti model doesn’t use the DLSS 3 feature.
The RTX 4090 is a significant improvement over the previous generation overall. Due to NVIDIA’s pricing approach, the other Lovelace GPUs have not received the best response from the community. The RTX 4080 is £1,199, and so is more than the RTX 3090 Ti, which costs between $1040 and $1049.
For those who are unable to decide between the 4080 and the 3090 Ti, DLSS 3.0 could be the decisive factor. However, the 24GB of G6X that the RTX 3090 Ti offers is incredibly attractive in terms of productivity. Waiting till these GPUs are evaluated is the only way to determine this for yourself.
After the launch of both cards, detailed testing and comparison can be made. But yes, the 4080 16GB will definitely offer a leap in performance compared to the RTX 3090 Ti mainly because of the Ada Lovelace architecture present in the RTX 4080.
Is 4080 better than 3080?
Let’s compare the Nvidia RTX 4080 and 3080 for another generational comparison. Despite having the same model, there are a lot of variances. The 80 series has emerged as the preferred option, but will this continue in the next generation?
The architecture has been upgraded for the next generation. Instead of using the Ampere architecture, the 4080 will use the Ada architecture. You can expect increased performance for the same GPUs as Nvidia continues to optimize and enhance the fundamental architecture.
The RTX 3080 uses the GA102-200 GPU model. While the AD103-300 chip is believed to be present in the RTX 4080, returning to TSMC, it will now be constructed using a 5nm process. As a result, it will contain an undetermined number of transistors and a 380mm² die size.

The 3080’s chip houses 8,704 CUDA cores and 8,960 in the 12GB model. You can observe an increase in VRAM when comparing the RTX 4080 and 3080 graphics cards—increased from 10/12GB to 16GB of GDDR6X RAM. However, there is also a regular 12GB variant. The capacity is growing together with the clock. With the more recent memory chips, the increase is 4 Gbps or 23 Gbps.
The memory bus, though, is allegedly getting smaller. From 384 bits down to 256 bits which may reduce the overall bandwidth for the newer card. Official benchmarks have not yet been released for the 4080. However, we may look at some preliminary 3DMark Time Spy Extreme data. The new card can reportedly achieve a 15,000 graphics score in the software.
The RTX 4080 vs 3080 comparisons is yet uncertain. There is a lot of speculation because there are no set specifications and standards. Even so, we anticipate advancements over the previous generation. Even though we already know that there will be a significant price hike, performance values are still uncertain. Though efficiency and effectiveness are probably to increase, does this justify the markup?
