For many, it feels as though there has been a Call of Duty release every year of their life. We have to go back as far as CoD2 in 2005 before the annual pattern halts.
2022 sees the return of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and this isn’t just a reboot, oh no, we are in for a sequel to the 2019 MW game.

Activision confirmed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 to be cross platform but we are still waiting to hear on crossplay.
In recent years, with players on a mixture of previous and current generation consoles, the question of whether or not a game will be cross-gen pops up regularly.
So will CoD:MW 2 get the same cross-gen support we have seen from previous titles?
Is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Crossplay?
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be crossplay on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Activision confirmed this in a preview that they gave to Forbes.
Being crossplay pretty much guarantees that the game will be cross-platform as well since there wouldn’t be any way to play with others without cross-platform play. Since the previous recent entries in the series have been cross-platform and cross-gen, it’s not much of a shock that the series is clearly heading in that direction.
We also learned in this preview that Warzone 2 will share the same fate. It looks like we should be gearing up to play MW2 with our friends regardless of their platform of choice. It also looks like COD games will be sticking to this feature for the foreseeable future, so whatever the series drops next will probably also have it.
Modern Warfare 2 Crossplay Problems
Since the game launched on 28 October 2022, users have reported a number of different issues with Crossplay in Modern Warfare 2. It seems like only PlayStation players are currently able to disable crossplay, while Xbox and PC players are forced to play with/against users on other platforms.
It seems like this problem is simply a bug, and will almost certainly be fixed in a subsequent update to the game. There isn’t any good reason why the ability to turn off crossplay would have been removed for Xbox and PC players.
Right now, we’re just stuck waiting for news from Activision on this problem. With any luck, it’ll be high up the priority list for a good bug fix. Either way, keep your eyes glued to our article on the matter for updates when they come.
Is Modern Warfare 2 Cross-gen?
According to Tom Henderson, a prominent CoD leaker, Modern Warfare II will be coming to current and previous generations of consoles.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard were both cross-gen titles, so it is fair to assume Tom is correct. I wouldn’t take this as fact, even Tom states “it will ultimately depend on the console market conditions“. The reason for the uncertainty could lie with the new engine and Infinity Wards ‘ a new generation of Call of Duty” tweet, which some took to mean that the latest title would only release for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Regardless of the power and possibilities of the new engine, it is still easy to assume we would see Modern Warfare 2 release on PS4 and the Xbox One too. If this is true does it mean next-gen is once again being held back? Activision like money, so it is easy to think they will just make the game as accessible as possible but we hope they go all-in with this latest title and show the world the potential of this newly developed engine.
