How to get Froglights in Minecraft

Like the Nether Update’s Shroomlight, the Wither-related Beacon, and a fully-charged Respawn Anchor before it, another bright light block was added to Minecraft with 1.19 – the Froglight. And, as with those earlier blocks (and many others), you’ll need to risk your life and venture to dangerous locations to obtain it. It seems Mojang is sadistic like that. If you’re after a Froglight or two, here’s how to get them, but we’re going to stick to torches, thanks.

What is a Minecraft Froglight, then?

Well, released as part of the 1.19 Wild Update, Froglights are another new light-emitting block, which comes in three colours and gives off the highest amount of light possible at light level 15. This interesting light block also features a directional texture, meaning you can place it in different ways – perfect for building. The three colors are all linked to each of the three Frog variants:

Warm (white) Frogs = Purple Pearlescent Froglights
Cold (green) Frogs = Green Verdant Froglights
Temperate (tan) Frogs = Yellow Ochre Froglights

Froglights are dropped by Frogs, but if you think it’s as simple (yet heartbreaking) as killing them, think again. In possibly the wildest and most complex item mechanic in Minecraft’s history, Froglight farming combines mobs from both the Overworld and The Nether. Expect a few attempts at this before success.

How to get Minecraft Frog Light

Simply put, Froglights are dropped when a Frog attacks/consumes a small Magma Cube. However, since Magma Cubes only spawn in The Nether – in Bastion Treasure Rooms, Nether Wastes, Fortresses and Basalt Deltas – you’ll need to lead your unsuspecting Overworld Frog to The Nether. You could go the other way, but there’s no point since you’ll need multiple Magma Cubes to one Frog – oh, and you’ll most likely die doing so. Don’t forget the other problematic fact that you won’t have any water in the Nether, so you can’t even bring a Bucket of Tadpoles to The Nether and let it mature there… It will need to be a fully grown Frog before entering the portal.

Frogs, Froglights and Magma Cubes

Once (if) you finally have your Frog in The Nether, depending on how many Froglights you’re after, you’ll need to get it to somewhere Magma Cubes regularly spawn. The best place would be a Bastion Treasure Room, since this is the only place you’ll find an actual Magma Cube Spawner. Working back, we’d recommend finding the spawner first, and then placing a Nether Portal close to it to bring your Frogs through.

Of course, if you’re looking to farm multiples of each Froglight, you’ll need at least one of each Frog variant in The Nether with you, and we’d then recommend making a fully-fledged Froglight farm. If you’re just looking for one or two to start with, then you can always do this manually. It will be safest to damage a large or medium-sized Magma Cube with a Bow so that you (and, more importantly, your Frog) can keep your distance until it’s small enough for Froggy to digest.

We’d end this by saying, “And that’s it! Now you know how to farm Minecraft Froglights!”, but that makes it sound too simple. So, instead, good luck, you’re gonna need it.
