We finally have a Final Fantasy 16 Release Date window, after years of waiting for the game to show itself.

But when is the Final Fantasy 16 release date window? What is the game itself? We take a look and find out.

Final Fantasy XVI is currently scheduled to launch in Summer of 2023. The game is being produced by Naoki Yoshida, with Hiroshi Takai as the main director and Kazutoyo Maehiro as the creative director & writer. It’s being published by Square Enix, with the last we saw of it at a PlayStation State Of Play in June 2022. It’s also currently got an exclusivity window with Sony, with the game only coming to other platforms later.

Before the initial reveal trailer was deleted and reuploaded the original trailer also mentioned a PC release, however.

The game was originally revealed in September 2020 as part of the PS5 reveal slate but was reportedly delayed in order to polish the features due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You may know the name of producer Naoki Yoshida from his work on Final Fantasy XIV, but that’s not the only major name working on this game. One of Devil May Cry’s Lead Combat Directors, Ryota Suzuki, is working as the battle director on the title, who also worked on Dragon’s Dogma. The swordplay in the title promises to be something special, with the game itself reportedly in the final stages of development.

What is Final Fantasy 16 about?

Final Fantasy 16 is a story primarily about one playable character and a whole host of massive battles between the summons of the game. As the official website for the game puts it:

“In previous interviews and updates, we didn’t delve too deep into details about the game system, but hopefully with this preview, you all were able to get a better picture of what actual gameplay will entail—namely, high-octane battles featuring our protagonist Clive Rosfield wielding a full arsenal of attacks unique to the game’s many Eikons (summons). Not to mention epic clashes between the Eikons themselves that put you right in the action.“

The game will also involve Clive’s younger brother Joshua Rosfield, but as of right now it’s pretty unclear exactly what their role in the game is and if they share equal roles in the narrative. We also know that a former princess from the Northern Territories, Jill Warrick, will be their foster sister. The trailer features many of the familiar elemental summons that fans will recognize such as:

Ifrit
Garuda
Shiva
Odin
Ramuh
Bahamut
Phoenix

You might know Ifrit from Final Fantasy XV in which the game literally opens with you fighting the eikon of fire, but the other titans might be unfamiliar to newer Final Fantasy fans.

The game is set in Valisthea, a world where people live in prosperity thanks to crystals called the Mothercrystals. There are also six different factions in the game that will play into the game in some way, but again we don’t really know how yet. These factions are:

The Holy Empire Of Sanbreque
The Kingdom Of Waloed
The Dhalmekian Republic
The Iron Kingdom
The Crystalline Dominion

You’ll be able to use various magicks and weapons of war to take out your enemies and make your way down the dangerous road you’ve been set on. We’ll obviously know more about the game in the next year, but in the meantime we did just get a brand new trailer titled ‘Ambtion’ that shows off a chunk of the story details behind the game.
