Remember the name Sharp? The electronics manufacturer featured on Manchester United shirts back in the 1990s, its fair to say that the rise of other brands in the TV market has relegated them in the pecking order of things.
But they launched something of a comeback in 2021 with a new range of affordable smart TVs, and at their annual Xperience Roadshow they announced more advanced models and a few more affordable sets.
We were given the opportunity to get a first-hand look at all the TVs launching in 2022 and 2023. Here’s what we gleaned about the new features and availability.
The new range includes a number of Mini LED displays, along with a new platform for the Mini LED and the FS gaming TVs
The EQ TVs will also be sticking around for another year, but these will move down in Sharp’s line-up to make room for the latest models.
Sharp will launch its new Mini LED TVs at the end of Q1 2023. The TVs have yet to receive official names, but the biggest difference between the three is the number of dimming zones available – 300, 1000 or 2000.
The XLED 2000 is the top-of-the-line Mini LED TV with 2000 dimming zones. The TV runs on Sharp’s new platform, as do the other two Mini LEDs and the FS gaming TV, which includes Filmmaker mode.
The TV has a max refresh rate of 144Hz refresh, Quantum Dot colour support, MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation) for motion and Dolby Vision IQ, which uses the TV’s sensor to adjust the picture settings depending on a room’s brightness so the viewer can see all the detail within the image.
Sound is provided by Harman Kardon with Dolby Atmos support on the TV’s speakers.
Next up is the XLED 1000 Mini LED, which includes 1000 dimming zones. It also features a 144Hz refresh rate, the new platform, Quantum Dot colour support and runs the Google TV interface. Like the XLED 2000, it also has an integrated sound system by Harman Kardon.
The final Mini LED is the XLED 300 with its 300 dimming zones. This TV is effectively the same as FP series model below, but features Mini LED panel technology.
The XLED 300 has Dolby Vision and Atmos, as well as DTS:X audio support. There’s also MEMC support for motion but this TV runs Android TV instead of newer Google TV.
Below the Mini LEDs are the FP and FN series. They share the same design and run on the current Sharp platform instead of the new one. The FP series is the more advanced of the two, as it features support for Dolby Atmos sound, Quantum Dot colours and MEMC motion.
The FP model Quantum Dot colours, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support, MEMC and a 60Hz refresh rate.
It’s available to purchase from Q1 2023 onwards.
The FN is seen as Sharp’s 4K UHD TV for a more mainstream audience. It features support for Dolby Vision, a 60Hz refresh rate and runs on Android TV. The downfiring speakers are tuned by Harman Kardon and there is DTS:X support but no Dolby Atmos. Sharp says the FN series is available to buy now.
Finally, Sharp is launching the FS gaming TV. This TV also happens to be the only one outside of Sharp’s Mini LED range that we know will launch with the new platform.
The display features a 144Hz refresh rate, Quantum Dot colours and Dolby Vision IQ to automatically adjust the picture settings according to the ambient light in a room. The TV features two 50W speakers with Sound by Harman Kardon.
The FS launches at the end of Q1 2023.
Here are the models Sharp launched in 2021. Some are still available to purchase while others may be harder to find or have been discontinued.
