Disney+ Hotstar has become the latest OTT service to offer anime series in India. The streaming platform announced that it has added the following seven series to its catalogue: Overlord, Dr. Stone Ryusui, Tomodachi Game, Dance Dance Danseur, Faraway Paladin, Platinum End & Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall.
The selection of shows is a mixed bag. The Overlord series (along with the currently airing fourth season), Tomodachi Game, and Dance Dance Danseur are good picks for the platform, as these shows have been received well by fans.
Dr. Stone Ryusui is a special episode of the popular Dr. Stone series. It serves as a bridge between the second and third season of the series, which are only available to stream on Netflix, so it doesn’t make much sense to carry a special on your platform that requires you to watch the show that is on another service.
It remains to be seen if Disney+ Hotstar would also become a destination for fans to consume anime legally in India. Netflix, Muse Asia, and Ani-One Asia continue to be at the forefront while Crunchyroll is also gearing up to expand its operations in India. Amazon’s Prime Video added a bunch of anime to woo in the anime crowd as well, but soon dropped the idea altogether with no new anime additions on the platform .
