The Callisto Protocol, upcoming horror release, is no longer part of the PUBG universes. It has been in development since 2019 and is currently slated for a release this year.

The Callisto Project Has Changed Worlds

As tweeted out by Glen A. Schofield, founder of Striking Distance Studios and CEO,:

FYI @CallistoTheGame is its own story and world. It no longer takes place in the PUBG Universe. It was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome & we will still have little surprises for fans, but TCP is its own world, story and universe.”

Schofield is the co-creator of the Dead Space franchise of games, and will ironically releasing close to the remake of Dead Space. Schofield created the studio is 2019, and was given the goal of expanding the PUBG: Battlegrounds universe, but clearly the ambition of The Callisto Protocol has rather grown in scale since then.

But why?

It remains to be seen what was even the plan to begin with, back when the game was set in the PUBG universe. Player Unknowns: Battlegrounds is a battle royale game, one that really has nothing at all to do with horror in the slightest. It strikes me that if they were to make a horror game set in that universe that it would be so completely and utterly divorced from the franchise that there would be very little point in having it set there in the first place. Hopefully making the project a separate thing will afford more creative freedom.
