Nvidia have chosen to ‘unlaunch‘ the 12GB version of the RTX 4080, the company has confirmed, admitting ‘it’s not named right’.
In a blog post titled, ‘We’re Unlauching the 12GB 4080’ the company confirmed the only version of the card that will come out will be the 16GB. This is because they admit having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is ‘confusing’.
They wrote: “We’re pressing the “unlaunch” button on the 4080 12GB. The RTX 4080 16GB is amazing and on track to delight gamers everywhere on November 16th.
“If the lines around the block and enthusiasm for the 4090 is any indication, the reception for the 4080 will be awesome.”

There are no concrete release dates yet for the RTX 4080, although we previously expected two models of the card. It’s likely the 12GB model could well be a 4070, although this is pure speculation.
The idea of two 80-variants is not unusual. The prior generation RTX 3080 arrived first in 10GB form, before an upgraded 12GB version hit the shelves a few months later.
The initial rumors for the RTX 40 series release date were for early Q3 even potentially in July, however, it’s now looking likely that a Q4 release is probably the best bet.
It follows a hugely successful launch of the RTX 4090, Nvidia’s new flagship card. We’ve collated our favourite RTX 4090 cards right here, for those who can’t wait for the 4080.
