Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Receives a Surprise Ray Tracing Performance Mode Update on PS5

The latest Spider-Man adventure from Insomniac Games already featured two different graphics output settings on the PlayStation 5, opting for fidelity or performance. A new, surprise update has added a third option, allowing for performance while still utilizing ray tracing tech.

The new graphics mode, dubbed “Performance RT,” was spotted by Twiter users and online forums today. According to the description in-game, this mode is an “alternate version” of the 60 FPS-focused Performance mode that adds ray tracing. The main tradeoff seems to be in resolution; in exchange for ray tracing, the game will adjust the screen resolution while also turning down the quality of reflections and pedestrian density.

If you haven’t been able to decide between those marvelous reflections and buttery-smooth 60 frames per second, this seems like the compromise. And honestly, for those who are still playing games on a 1080p TV, it might be a great option.

Insomniac’s shorter Spider-Man experience, centered on newcomer Miles Morales, has been a pretty popular game in the PlayStation 5 launch lineup. Though it’s a bit closer to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in size than a full game akin to 2018’s Spider-Man game, it’s been a gorgeous excuse to swing back through the virtual streets of Spidey’s New York. Miles is also a fantastic protagonist, and the game even builds off the character’s popularity surge from the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by including a specially-animated Spider-Verse suit.

If you’ve been constantly swapping between two graphical modes while swinging through Harlem and Manhattan, then this might be the graphics mode to settle on. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is currently available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, though ray tracing features are only available for the latter.
