Cosina is expanding the mounting availability of their Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 35mm F2 Aspherical lens to include Nikon Z-mount cameras. Currently, the lens is only natively available for Sony E-mount cameras like the Sony A7IV.
The general concept behind the APO-Lanthar design is bringing limitless to zero top color gradation of raw RGB light, a goal of many lens makers since the transition from film to digital began in photography.
The biggest issue in this transition is that high-pixelized digital sensors require extremely tight control of color, even more, complex than moving from black and white to color film in the 50s. The APO-Lanthar concept was developed to handle that complex control and minimize chromatic aberration.
In the manual Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 35mm F2 Aspherical Lens, this is accomplished through 11 elements organized in nine groups, including five low-dispersion and two double-sided aspherical elements. The lens also offers a nice bokeh thanks to its 12-blade aperture.
The result is a minimum focus length of 13.8″ (35cm) and an aperture range of F2 through F16.
The Z-mounted lens has also been optimized for the image sensor in Nikon Z-mount cameras so that the electronic contact points are precisely aligned in order to effectively communicate lens metadata to the camera.
This includes Exif information, internal bruise correction, and three types of pin adjustment support functions (pit adjustment due to focus point green color change, pin adjustment due to peaking function, and pin adjustment via zoom button).
The data also has focus on confirmation and supporting data to ensure that Sony’s in-body image stabilization feature can accurately compensate for any camera shake.
With a retro 70s metallic style and dual imperial and metric measurements on its focal ring, the overall dimensions of the 35mm F2 APO-L lens are 70.4mm in length, 67.6mm lens diameter, and a weight of 360g. The lens also enjoys a 62.1° angle of view.
The Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm F2 Aspherical lens for Nikon Z mount cameras is priced at around $930 US and will ship sometime in June 2022. Using Google Translate, more information can be found on Cosina’s website.
